Carol Thompson Self Portrait
Hello August!  Hello State and County Fairs!
The wonderful sunny days of August are here.  Days to picnic in the park, days to splash in the "old swimmin' hole", and days to attend your state or county fair.  These showcases for the talent of your friends and neighbors young or old, to me, are the best of times.
I was privileged to be a judge of the oil painting and mixed media artwork at our Thurston County (Washington) Fair.  I was "blown away" by the fine quality of art being produced by not only the "seasoned" citizens,  but the young people in our area.  It speaks well of our dedicated teachers and a community interested in the visual arts.  It was difficult to choose one overall winner.  The participants are all winners in my view.  From simple pencil sketches to incredibly detailed oil paintings, the artwork I saw was outstanding.
So, visit your local fairs and pay attention to the art of your community.  Art truly DOES enrich us all.

Stolen Art, Stolen Money
Have you ever had anything taken from you against your will?  Have you ever been ripped off by someone you trusted?  I certainly hope not, because it is a helpless feeling, a feeling of disbelief and rage.

"I---expect honesty and integrity from those persons I do business with."

I am a trusting person.  I look for the best in people and expect honesty and integrity from those persons I do business with.  Gratefully the bad experiences are few and far between.
When I was just beginning my career, I displayed some of my paintings at a local clinic.  The prices were very modest and when two of the pieces disappeared from the walls, the police declared it "petty theft".  I was crushed!  How could anyone with a conscience take what does not belong to them,  whatever the price?
Then, there was a gallery in a community a half hour's drive from my home, that requested a showing of my seascapes.  There was a "break-in" one night at the gallery.  The only things missing were three of my paintings

(They were never recovered).  An expensive camera and other electronic items were not touched.  I could only shake my head in disbelief.  Shortly after this incident, the gallery closed it's doors.
In good faith I shipped two large paintings to a posh gallery in Beverly Hills, California.  The gallery owner acknowledged receipt of them and after a couple of weeks I got one back.  The other never showed up and no money was ever paid.

"Somewhere a Carol Thompson seascape languishes in Limbo."

Stealing art and not paying for it IS stealing money from the artist.  The pursuit of these criminals is costly and frustrating and futile.  I must leave it to the heart and conscience of these perpetrators to do the right thing.  Still, I believe that 99.9 percent of business people are honest.  So, I will continue to do business as I have for the last 20 years, and overcome the disgust and disappointment toward the few, with an up-beat attitude, looking for the best in all people.

Sunset Bay (oil)
Sunset Bay (print, note card)
"There is a place on the Oregon Coast of the Pacific Ocean known as 'Sunset Bay'.  In this corner of the world you can behold vivid and glowing sunsets that etch themselves indelibly into your memory.  This is only one of these moments.  It is a time to pause and reflect on nature's glory and drink in the pure beauty of a sunset in a sheltered bay."
"Point Vicente lighthouse holds a third-order Fresnel lens atop a cylindrical reinforced concrete tower. The light shines forth at 185 feet above the Pacific Ocean on a high steep headland near Los Angeles, California, between Redondo Beach and San Pedro. It was lit in 1926 and has undergone various changes, including automation in 1971. Coast Guard personnel live there, but it is closed to the public."

"The wind and tide relentlessly push waves higher and higher until they roll and break into 'turbulent water' upon the shore."
