"It is such a rare opportunity to see a series of waves pushing on toward shore in a zig-zag fashion, each one catching the light at its apex."
Artist comment: "The onshore wind that is bringing a storm in from the ocean, is roughing the surface of the sea into multiple waves that seem to zig-zag as they rush toward the beach. When I saw this occurence, I was intrigued. I commited the scene to memory, to paint later in my studio. I chose a square format to capture the scope of the swells so that each one could stand on its own. I painted the sky, reserving that same color for the 'troughs'. After rendering the cloud bank, I went right to work painting the translucent waves. The way they follow one another leads the viewer`s eye forward in a pleasing rhythm. The low angle of sunlight highlights the crests of the waves, and creates a star-like sparkle on top. The foam patterns on the waves further suggest the upward rise of the swells. A few birds in the sky complete the mood of the seascape."
