"Port Orford View" by Carol Thompson

"A grouping of large stack rocks captures your imagination in this 'Port Orford view'."

Artist comment:  "Imagine the millenia before current time when geological changes shaped the Oregon coastline, eroding away softer materials and leaving these looming monoliths awash in the tidal waters of the Pacific ocean.  It is a recognizable landmark as you travel south along the coast highway 101.  But, do plan to stop there and spend some time walking the beach, investigating the tide pools, and sitting on the warm soft sand.  I did.  Then at home in my Olympia, Washington studio, I painted that memory.  With oil on canvas, I sketched the scene from the quick notes and brief drawings in my notebook.  I painted the blues, then the headlands and sand, and finally the rocks.  It was a fun challenge to indicate the cracks and splits in the rocks.  I finished with a splatter of light and dark paint to show the pebbles on the beach."
