"Last Blast (of color)" by Carol Thompson

Last Blast (of color)

"As the sun slowly sinks into the sea, the sky lights up with a 'last blast' of color."

Artist comment:  "For quite some time I have been observing the sunset colors of the of the Northwest Washington coast.  on one occasion the conditions were perfect to create a vivid red glow as the sun dropped into the ocean.  As soon as I arrived home to my studio, I set up a canvas on my easel and made a sketch and color notes.  The next day I began painting, in oils, this fabulous memory.  Drawing on my experience and knowledge of color, I began at the top of the piece, working the sky colors down onto the water.  I also know that the sky at the zenith is deep blue/purple, which of course, reflects upon the ocean's surface.  I then articulated the foam patterns, the detail of the rocks and three seagulls winging their way to shelter in the 'last blast' of color over the sea."
