"A patch of blue sky is quickly disappearing as 'January showers' move in over the sea."
Artist comment: "I love grey! A cloudy, wet day at the ocean means more to me than a stroll on a tropical beach (maybe that's why I choose to live and paint in the Pacific Northwest). In this oil on canvas, I chose a rocky coastline that stretches off into the distance, so I could depict the diminishing values of the misty day. A huge cloud bank on the left sends scudding clouds across in front of the slanting rain. I began with a sketch using neutral grey. First I painted all the blue areas, then the dark greens and the translucency and spillover roller. Next I used a palette knife to articulate the cliffs. When the oil was 'set up', I put in foam patterns, runoff, and the white frothy splashes."
