"Guardian Of The Shores"

"It is a perfect summer afternoon on the Oregon Coast. Time seems to stand still as you gaze across a crystal sea to the distant lighthouse, standing silent, watchful, ever vigilant, ever alert, to warn passing ships that beneath the calm of a passive sea, danger may trap the unwary sailor. The lighthouse is the 'Guardian of the shores' of the blue Pacific."

ARTIST COMMENT
Sometimes the title of a painting is obvious and seems to present itself without much thought.  At other times, the artist must think long and deeply about what message they want to imply.  This oil on stretched canvas is first, a seascape, and secondly the distant lighthouse.  The setting is the lighthouse at Yaquina Head as viewed from Moolack Beach.  The sea is relatively calm, and yet, the lighthouse must constantly be "on" to warn mariners of treacherous,  nearly submerged, offshore rocks, even on clear and cloudless days.  I chose to emphasize the blue and aqua qualities of the water to play up the distant lighthouse on a sunny afternoon in the Pacific Northwest.
