| "Distant Sentinel"
"The sea rolls in and breaks in a misty
spray upon rocky cliffs at lands' end. In this scene, the ocean seems calm.
In the distance stands a silent sentinel, the lighthouse. For more than
a century, mariners have been guided safely around treacherous rocks through
fog and storms by a 'distant sentinel'."
ARTIST COMMENT Lighthouses have long been fascinating to me. Whether close up and detailed or off in the distance, those distinctive beacons have served to guide mariners to safe harbor or around treacherous rocky headlands. This painting emphasizes the breaking waves and rock strewn surf with the lighthouse in the distance. My inspiration for this scene is the lighthouse at Yaquina Head near Newport, Oregon.
