"A line of clam diggers spreads out on the shining beach as they seriously seek the tasty mollusk, while ‘clamming under the sun’."
Artist comment: "In my series of pastel paintings of clamming on the Pacific northwest beaches, I had the unique opportunity to be there on a bright overcast day when the world seemed to turn to yellow-gold. The figures became black silhouettes against the glare. I sketched the scene as I remembered it, then using soft pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes textured paper, I began with the sky - then rendered the ‘wet’ beach putting in the sun and it’s reflection as I painted. When I was satisfied with the colors, I carefully painted the stark black of the people and their reflections. A few dark dashes for accents and I was done!"
