"'The rock', a huge volcanic monolith, dominates the skyline at Cannon Beach, Oregon."
Artist comment: "Tourists and locals alike affectionately refer to the huge haystack shaped monolith as 'the rock'. Here, on 140 # Arches hot pressed watercolor paper, I captured the colors and awesome size of the rock in a memorable scene. Travelling south on the coast highway, as my husband, Ed, and I came around a curve, there was the Pacific Ocean and 'the rock'. Later in my studio, I sketched it and painted a warm red, yellow, and orange sky, the dark browns of the rock, and the glowing sea. This is a very warm painting with only a slice or two of lavender beneath the rolling breakers. In the dim shadow can be seen people dwarfed by the enormity of the amazing natural phenomenon."
