"Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, a marvel of engineering skill and keepers' fortitude, still stands on solid rock nearly a mile off the Oregon Coast north of Cannon Beach. Thie view from the beach at Ecola Park, emphasizes the awesome strength and bitter loneliness of 'the lighthouse'."
Off the coast of Oregon, near Cannon Beach, is a large solid rock island, called Tillamook Rock. The lighthouse there is a testament to the ablility of man to overcome extreme hazards to build a beacon of safety for mariners in days of old. I painted the scene at sunset, as I saw the lighthouse fading into the increasing mist at the end of the day. The sky was still bright and reflected its brightness onto the surface of the sea. I chose watercolor on Arches 140# hot-pressed paper to exemplify that misty mood.
