| "North Head Lighthouse"
"The 'North Head Lighthouse' rises above the Pacific Ocean one mile north of the mouth of the Columbia River that divides Washington and Oregon . The waters here are so very treacherous that two lighthouses were erected to warn mariners. It's sister beacon is Cape Disappointment Light Station at Illwaco, Washington."
ARTIST COMMENT "This is North Head Lighthouse, north of the Columbia River near Long Beach, Washington State. I chose the viewpoint from the hill above the lighthouse. My first painting of this beacon was one of a grey, overcast day, with the light beaming through the misty fog. This one is the extreme opposite. The day is warm and sunny, illuminating the tower with a strong glow. The grasses in the foreground are bending in a gentle breeze. Gouache seemed to be the best media to paint this second version of North Head. The water-based media lends itself to the ambience of softness and luminosity." |
