"Yaquina Bay Lighthouse" by Carol Thompson

"Yaquina Bay Light was lit in 1871 and darkened three years later.  Rather than being demolished, it was put to use as a crew station for the U. S. Lifesaving Service.  In the 1940's, it was taken over by the Lincoln County Historical Society and is now open to visitors.  It is Oregon's oldest wooden-framed lighthouse and was equipped with a fifth order Fresnel lens, which burned whale oil.  It is filled with 19th century furnishings and memorabilia."

Artist comment:  "Lighthouses have always been a subject of fascination to me.  My husband and I have travelled the coast of the Pacific northwest to visit them.  In my studio, I recreate the moment with oil on canvas.  I began this painting with a detailed sketch, paying attention to composition and balance on a mediuim sized canvas.  Starting with the sky, I worked my way from top to bottom, finishing each element as I went along.  The blue shadows were very important to dramatize the effect of sunlight.  I carefully painted the flag, then completed the grass and trees."
