"Cape Arago Lighthouse" by Carol Thompson

Cape Arago Lighthouse

"Built in 1934, this is the third structure on this site. This lighthouse sits on a rocky, partially wooded island reached by a foot bridge. A 44 foot octagonal tower has a fog signal, radio beacon, and light, all vital to navigation in the rough waters of the Oregon Coast."

Artist comment:  "I reached this little lighthouse after a brisk walk.  It was well worth the effort.  Emerging from the fog, my husband and I saw the light, and the sun, beginning to break through the fog, illuminated it with a pinkish glow.  It was a scene I wanted to paint, so with camera and note pad, I researched the lighthouse.  In my home studio, I recreated the mood with oil on canvas.  I especially like gray days, and here was my opportunity to paint a gray (but not gloomy) sky.  Though the colors are relatively muted, I focused on the lens with a bright, cheery yellow."
