"Black Iris" by Carol Thompson

Black Iris

"Tall and stately, dark and mysterious, a black iris stands alone;  towering over the smaller bud about to open.  Soon the new bud will be in that exalted place, as the black iris continues its summer cycle."

Artist comment:  "Among the array of summer beauties, the black iris stands alone.  In my Olympia, Washington garden, I planted a row of various colors.  When this velvety black bloom opened, I knew it had to be painted.  I sketched the flowers and two buds on Arches 140 # hot-pressed watercolor paper.  After washing in an abstract background, I rendered the deep black in layers, leaving the edges lighter.  Finally I painted the leaves and stems."
