| "Sugar Plum"
"Tall bearded irises are standard summer fare in my garden. This two-toned violet confection reminds me of "sugar plum" treats."
ARTIST'S COMMENTS "This perfect iris keeps returning every year in even greater glory than the year before. I must say, this one is the most faithful iris in my garden. Is it any wonder that I chose to paint her? I sketched the blooms onto 140# hot-pressed watercolor paper in a reverse 'S'. In an impressionistic manner, I painted the background to suggest an early morning scene. Then I painted the blossoms in layers, carefully rendering them with delicacy yet with depth of color. Finally the leaves were filled in keeping true to the natural look of the garden when leaves are turning brown or are attacked by some 'critter'." Carol Thompson's personal garden is the subject of this series of watercolor paintings entitled "Carol's Garden". These florals are inspired by the many hours of pleasure received from working the rich soil, nurturing the seedlings, and admiring the fragrant blossoms. Her garden is her getaway, a place to clear her mind; to daydream, a place to get in touch with nature, and a place to think, plan, and just relax. |
