"Midnight"

"Think of the darkest of dark nights when there is no moon.  This enchanting iris captures the mystery and intensity of a blue-black 'midnight'."

ARTIST'S COMMENT
"Midnight is not the "official" name of this black iris.  It is the title of the painting done with watercolor on 140# hot-pressed paper.  I grow this beauty in my garden and it never fails to reward me with multitudes of large blossoms, year after year.  I sketched three of the blooms in a modified "C" composition with the largest as a base to weigh the subject, with the two remaining flowers in stages of fullness.  I paid special attention to the layering of color to obtain the result of deep rich intensity yet maintaining a look of delicacy in the petals".

Carol Thompson's personal garden is the subject of this series of watercolor paintings entitled "Carol's Garden". These florals are inspired by the many hours of pleasure received from working the rich soil, nurturing the seedlings, and admiring the fragrant blossoms. Her garden is her getaway, a place to clear her mind; to daydream, a place to get in touch with nature, and a place to think, plan, and just relax.
