"Single Dogwood" by Carol Thompson
"Sturdy and bright, a 'single dogwood' is
appealing in its simplicity. No wonder so many gardens feature this
Artist comment: "I like to focus on one single flower and explore all the details that
it has to offer. Using Arches 140# hot-pressed watercolor paper,
I first drew the subject lightly with a # 2 pencil. I then washed
in the background keeping in mind the color of the bloom, the size
and shape; and where my highlights would be, based on the direction of
light. In this small watercolor, I emphasized the mood of the dawning
of a Spring day, with the yellow light in the upper right, and deep shadows
in the lower left. The detail was carefully placed in layers as I
completed the piece."
