"Tugging - David Brusco" by Carol Thompson

"Doing it's job of tugging, David Brusco makes good time along the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon.

Artist comment:  "This pastel painting on textured paper is another in my series of working boats of the Pacific Northwest. I have long been fascinated by the contrast of curvy ahapes and straight angles of all types of watercraft, most particularly tugs and fishing vessels. The David Brusco was built in 1966, is 36 meters long by 9 meters wide with a gross tonnage of 346. I used soft pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes paper. I began with the background sky, then hills, water, and bridge keeping the main subject until last. On the boat I painted the lightest lights and worked toward the black. The red and yellow accents keep the painting interesting. I enjoyed the challenge of the form and design of one of my favorite subjects.
