"Hawaiian Chieftain" by Carol Thompson

Hawaiian Chieftain

"On the 200th Anniversary of Astoria, Oregon, the sailing ship 'Hawaiian Chieftain' moves gracefully across the gleaming blue water.”

"Artist comment:  "Ketch topsail replican of a typical early 19th century early European merchant trader, crafted 1988 in Hawaii, this vessel was built for cargo trade between the Hawaiian Islands.  Proudly flying the U.S. flag, auxillary engines push her on calm wind days.  This is a pastel painting on Canson Mi-Teintes textured paper.  The sky is gradated color to convey the feeling of a warm sunny day.  The preponderence of cool blue sets off the warms of the hull and sunlit sails.  I completed the sea, sky and bridge, then carefully rendered the details of the ship.  Finally I drew in the lines with pastel and regular pencils.”
