CDK-N
"Cedar King"

"The little tug boat 'Cedar King' seems dwarfed by the larger working tugs in Olympia, Washington's harbor.  But don't be fooled, pound for pound this tiny tug can more than pull her weight!"

ARTIST COMMENT
"Here is one of my pastel paintings of tugboats that I have done as a series of 'working tugs at play'.  The South Sound Maritime Association in  Olympia, Washington, presents a once a year tugboat race. Tugs of all sizes, shapes and job responsibilities, gather to join in the fun.  The 'Cedar King' depicted here is one of the diminutive tugs that compete.  I chose to show her in a setting against one of the largest of the working boats of the Foss line.  I really liked the bright red and black that stood out in the morning sunlight, and reflected so dazzlingly in the yet relatively calm waters of the harbor.  Canson Mi-Tientes toned paper was my choice to depict the scene.  I like to paint reflections and sometimes get carried away, even painting squiggles in the sky!"
